Tips for Shopping for an Electric Bass

August 21, 2009 by Johnny Applespeed

A Little History Today the Fender Precision Bass is the most recognized without a doubt. This electric bass has a single set of pickups set about half-way in-between the the bridge and the bottom of the neck. Two control potentiometer as used for the volume setting and tone. The neck on the Fender Precision is generally considered a little thick compared to some other basses. The Fender Jazz Bass is quite comparable to the Precision. The Jazz Bass has two pickups and 3 separate controls. The Fender Jazz also has a little thinner neck. Most manufacturers make copies of the Fender basses and they appear very similar.

The Body of the Electric Bass Almost all of the solid-body bass guitars are made of wood. Hardwoods like maple, ash, or alder are commonly used . Cheaper bass guitars are sometimes made from plywood or even new synthetic materials. These new composites seem to have not been well-accepted by the purists. Solid body guitars have no resonance. They do not provide much to the tone quality of the bass. This lack of resonance affords the designer the opportunity to make the body shape to be almost anything they want. It doesn’t affect the sound of the instrument. Make sure the bass body feels right when shopping. Tryout a lot of. different basses. See how they feel and where they seem to rest on your body. Some bassists play with the bass riding high on their chest. Others will bend over with the bass nearly hitting the floor. It is cool to look cool sometimes, but playing the important thing. Make sure the bass feels right.

The Bass Neck Possibly the most important part of buying an electric bass is how the neck feels in your hand when you fret. When trying out basses, be sure to pay close attention to the neck thickness, string spacing, and the length of the strings. If you have small hands look for a small neck and vice versa. This is not always appropriate but it is a great place to start to see what necks feel right. The standard bass guitar neck is 34 long. Longer necks are available and different sizes of basses are available. Also, make sure the neck is straight. You can check this by holding the guitar like you are looking down the barrel of a rifle and site down the neck from the bottom to the bridge. If the neck is crooked, this is a problem you may not be able to correct with set up. Check this out, please.

Strings The standard bass has 4 strings and is tuned like the first four strings of a 6-string guitar E-A-D-G. There are also 5 and 6-string basses available as more bassists have become interested in soloing and have more range. A 5-string bass is usually tuned B-E-A-D-G, and the standard 6-string is tuned B-E-A-D-G-C. Additional strings generally make the neck wider so make sure to try these out before buying. If you are buying a your first bass get a four string and learn that. If you get to be a pro you need to know how to play it.

Frets vs Fretless The Fender Precision got its name because its frets allow for precise fingering. A cello for instance, has no frets and the player must know exactly where each note should be fingered. Get a fretted bass if you are buying your first bass. You will need the precise location of each note for tuning from the fret placement to get started. Using a fretless bass demands that you know where the notes are on the bass. Each note played needs to be in tune. For some, a fretless bass may never be an option.

Purchasing the Electric Bass Before you put your hard earned money down, do some needed homework. A town with guitar stores is great. Go out and try some with the intention of learning about different basses. It is best to try as many basses as you can before deciding exactly what you want. When you do definitely decide on a bass your choices for places to buy are wide and differing. Online stores can usually save you money. But you need to decide for yourself. If everyone buys online then the guitar shop you visited may not be there when you need strings. So, think it all through.

If you are buying a bass for the first time, it would be best to get a high quality four string, fretted, from a well-known manufacturer. This is a safe bet. Good luck.

The web is full of guitar websites however one in particular is turning heads called Guitar in a Nutshell. It’s a specialist site built for complete or struggling beginners and promises to teach a unique and compact system of strums and chords. Once learnt the method opens the door to 100’s of popular songs in a short space of practice time.

These fast results are attained largely through it’s system of strums and how they can be applied universally to an enormous range of guitar songs. The ethic of practicing correctly is guaranteed through the use of a separate Practice Module and a Songbook shows you how to put the Guitar in a Nutshell system into immediate effect with real songs.

It takes just 4 lessons from an online DVD to learn the basic system behind Guitar in a Nutshell, hence its name. The subject of how to practice correctly is also a very important aspect as without students will experience a high failure rate. Following from the initial 4 lessons, improver and intermediate levels are also available with an even learning progression.

Apart from beginner students, Guitar in a Nutshell is also a powerful tool for those how have been playing for years but have never been able to push through a beginner level on the instrument. They are stuck in ruts and despite apparent ‘practice’ going absolutely nowhere. This class of student is actually surprising common.

It’s mostly through inferior instruction, confusing and unnecessary lesson content plus a general lack in understanding of how beginner students learn that lead most people to this situation.

A hallmark of Guitar in a Nutshell is the clarity it delivers in online lessons, generally its objective is to ensure that every lesson is understood 100% by any student who watches it. The method was actually born out of teaching real life beginner guitar students on a 1-1 basis. Through this work it was noticed that essentially they all shared the same challenges and problems when trying to learn the instrument.

It was in response to the teaching challenge of “How can I get these classic problems solved and deliver a simple system to beginners for playing guitar songs?” that created Guitar in a Nutshell.

Takamine Acoustic Left Hand And Electric Left Hand Oriented Guitars

August 21, 2009 by Zane J Freeman

When you talk about acoustic left hand guitars, the name Takamine immediately pops its head up. A guitar manufacturer based in Japan, the US distributor is Kaman Corporation. They are most known for their trademark pre-amp/EQ built into every model of A/E. This also applies to their acoustic left handed instruments as well.

Every Takamine acoustic electric guitar can be ordered in left hand style.

Two series of Takamine acoustic electric left-handed guitars stand out from the many offered by the company. The G series has several kinds acoustic electric guitars in both right and left hand models. Many include a solid spruce top with nato sides and back. Nato helps make instruments great.

Dollar for dollar, the Takamine acoustic electric guitar left hand oriented is top notch for several reasons. First, unlike their rival, who shall remain nameless here, the body style has not been altered. It is still a classic dreadnought with a flat rear and molded sides. This has maintained the acoustic tone every player craves and chases and will not slip from the lap when playing.

Only one change has been made to any of their guitars, namely that some of the acoustic left hand guitars now have a cutaway. Single cutaways are superior, because they increase the player’s range by making it easier to play high notes. The majority of models have relatively small necks with 20 frets; the neck joins at the 14th fret, making frets 15 to 20 easier to play. This becomes even more important when you need more power for rhythm riffs and leads. Takamine electric guitars for left handers contain wonderful pre-amps and EQs, usually with Takamine’s proprietary TK4N electronics. Players can adjust the middle range while they’re playing, and the notch filter can also be tuned.

The single variation is that a few of these acoustic left hand guitars possess a cutaway and a few do not. I like using the single cutaway as it permits using the higher register, offering the player a greater range. A great number of the models I observed possess a smaller scale neck with just 20 frets. The neck meet at the 14th and you get easy access to frets 15 through 20. That is really important at the time you kick in the pre-amp and power up for leads or standout rhythm riffs.

I cannot finish this one without a word on Takamines Natural series. This is a more upscale model from the G series and features a Mahogany back and sides with a solid cedar top. Still, the Takamine Natural acoustic electric guitar left handed version is a great value for the money.

As they say, the life of the guitar is in the wood and these series from Takamine are no different. Both series of acoustic left hand guitars, electric or not, have extremely good tone and clarity. Combine Takamines attention to workmanship with a set of medium to light steel strings and you have a winning musical combination.

In any case, when you are a left hand player, you need a guitar that is made FOR left hand players. You can find an electric guitar, left hand especially, at www.lefthandedguitarmall.com. This site is all about connecting left hand players with quality left hand instruments. If you are a lefty, you need to see what they are all about, so be sure to visit today.

Synyster Gates - The Best Modern Guitarist

Brian Elwin Haner was born on the 7th of July better known as Synyster Gates which is his stage name, he is the backup vocalist and the lead guitarist for Avenged Sevenfold, an American heavy metal/hard rock band. He attended the Musicians Institute situated in Hollywood after attending 2 different schools in California. Despite the fact that he did not graduate from this institute, music flowed through his veins. Before joining Musicians Institute he had taught himself the basics of music by viewing music videos and reading books.

This is surprising because his father was guitar player and also a songwriter who had played with Frank Zappa too. Synyster, who prefers to use Bogner amps and Schecter guitars, received a phone call from The Rev of Avenged Sevenfold and was asked if he was willing to join that group as their lead guitarist this occurred after he attended the Institute for roughly six months. Opting to pursue the career of a studio musician, Synyster forsake his education and joined Avenged Sevenfold.

He had joined this group towards the end of the year 1999 when he was just 18 years of age. This was immediately before the recording of Avenged Sevenfold’s 1st album titled `Sounding the Seventh Trumpet’. Synyster featured on the EP of Avenged Sevenfold, `Warmness of the Soul’ and also on the re-release of the first album of that group. At certain moments, Synyster also plays the piano for a few selected songs. The Rev during the course of a drunken drive thought out the name Synyster Gates. A few of his band members assumed that Synyster had often thought himself as too good a player for that type of band, but these allegations are brushed aside by Synyster.

This renowned guitarist, along with The Rev had also played for Pinkly Smooth, a metal band. Since they wanted to devote all their time behind Avenged Sevenfold, both of them finally left this group. Synyster Gates has won quite a number of awards like the Total Guitar Magazine’s guitarist of the year award in 2006 and also the `Young Shredder’ award in 2006. He has also appeared in guest appearances in music videos like `The River’ (Good Charlotte), and Dirty Little Girl (Burn Halo). Schecter guitars are endorsed by this famous guitarist and there are two different versions of his signature model.

The History Of Vintage Synthesizers

August 21, 2009 by Michael Clakson

Synthesizers are musical instruments capable of producing a myriad of tones and sounds. Vintage synthesizers were more limited in capability than their modern counterparts. The appearance and size of synthesizers have also changed dramatically since they were initially introduced.

The first synthesizer was invented in 1876 by Elisa Gray, the inventor of the telephone. Called the musical telegraph, it was a single note oscillator which used the same technology as a telephone. The synthesizer was discovered accidentally, when Elisa Gray discovered that sound can be manipulated with vibrating electromagnetic circuit. Following this invention, other synthesizers were invented. The technology of vintage synthesizers was derived from early musical instruments, analogue computers, and some laboratory test instruments.

A microtonal electronic keyboard oboe was invented in 1937 by Ivor Darregg. Following this, an ANS synthesizer was invented by Evgeny Murzin. In 1958, a large Mark 2 Music Synthezer was invented and kept at the Columbia Princeton Electronic Music center in New York. This synthesizer could only be played after the machine had been fully programmed. There was a vacuum tube system which had to be manually handled while creating any type of new sound.

Daphne Oram coined the term “Oramics technique” to describe the synthesizer she created in 1958 and remained in use for several years at the BBC radio phonic Workshop. Other inventors of the late 1940s and early 1950s, including Raymond Scott, John Hanert, Hugh Le Caine created other automated music controllers.

By 1960, modified synthesizers that could be played in real time were invented. They were so large that they had to be confined in the sound studio. Modern synthesizers have many more features than did vintage synthesizers, which were made simply of modular devices and normally had the piano tone. A few other tones were available but there was not much to choose from.

We can try many tones on old age synthesizers. Actually they were devices made in a unique way. The mechanics had to be supported on the meaning of modularity. Robert Moog made a synthesizer which was very famous at that time. The synthesizer helped a lot of pop musicians. The attraction about this instrument was that it was compact than the previous instruments and it looked different from a machine.

Micky Dolenz of “The Monkees” was the first to buy this synthesizer. Their fourth album, called Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd, released in 1967, was the first album to feature a synthesizer. This album marked the beginning of the synthesizers popularity with musicians.

As time passed by new modifications started taking place on synthesizers. During this time their new models were invented. The new ones were far more updated then the vintage ones. But we should always remember that old age synthesizers were the first that made new age synthesizers. And for that reason, we shall always keep them in our minds.

Dissecting The Various Pieces and Parts Of The Melodic Cello

August 21, 2009 by Jim Samposzi

The cello is a spin-off of the group of stringed musical instruments and is played solo, with an orchestra or as an instrument in chamber music. This instrument is one of the biggest of their kind , second to the double bass.

The cello is also called a mini violone - a large Italian string instrument which is like the violin. The reference cello is derived from the Italian word vioncello which in translation is violin. The cello, is however very similar to the violin for cellos have notes in C2 and towards middle C. The cello’s strings also include G2, D3, and A3. The is that the cello octave lower after proper tuning.

An antique cello was usually rather stunning and elegant. The other side, neck, and sides are usually lathed in a premium maple. And, the top , dipped in spruce. Also, in these periods, cellos were made by hand. However, today, they are made out of a device, out of bad wood, and sometimes, even aluminum. The cello, by design, is crafted in intricate detailing in the top and side. These detailed designs are known as, purling. These are there for decoration. However, after they become apart of the instrument’s structure, they become structural. If a purling is cracked or split, it can run down the side and make the sound that is produced compromised.

A popular recipe for cellos nowadays is carbon fiber. These types play best outdoors and are less susceptible to rain damage. Others prefer this kind for the sounds are deeper and mum better. Also, carbon fiber and aluminum cellos are said to last for decades and be resistant to breaking, chipping, or running.

These amazing instruments have other intricate parts such as, the peg box, holes, and scroll. The carved neck sits on the top of the string instrument and makes is stand out among the others. The peg box sits above the carved neck .Also, the fingerboard transitions to the peg box, which holds the strings and has keys for tuning. The scroll is the swirly end of wood that is on the tippy top. Scrolls are traditional to cellos and most stringed instruments of the violin family.

The strings of the cello are usually made of metal or synthetic chemicals. Most of the cellos available today are stringed up as aluminum or titanium. And, chrome is sometimes used as well. As with all modern instruments, players have different preferences on the brand of strings they have to use.

The lower part of the cello contains strings, a tailpiece, end pin, bridge, and f-shaped holes referred to as f-holes. Then, on up, the bridge holds the strings in front of the hollowed out part of the body. The f-holes are the cavities on either side of the metal bridge. The tailpiece secures all the strings together against the body of the instrument. Then, even lower, the end pin the cello in place so one can play it.

How To Transfer Music From iPod to iTunes

August 21, 2009 by Kylie Gawron

While it’s very common to download music from CDs or the iTunes Store from your computer to your iPod, many people would also like to transfer their music from their iPod back to their computer. Unfortunately Apple decided that iTunes shouldnt help with this, even though Apple should have known this would be an important feature.

Some believe that Apple is intentionally trying to prevent songs from being taken illegally. Imagine that you purchase a new computer, install iTunes, and attempt to transfer songs from your iPod to that new computer. What is it about this process that is unjust or crooked?

Therefore, transferring songs from your iPod to your laptop or your computer at work is probably out of the question as well.

Sadly, iTunes on your new computer has been set to instinctively replace your current iTunes library. These settings will wipe out the library on your iPod, along with any music you have stored on it, and use the new, empty iTunes library. Yeesh!!!

Needless to say, people quickly figured out how to bypass this bad situation. You need to choose ‘no’ when you’re asked if you want to ‘auto-sync’ your iTunes and your iPod.

To transfer music from your iPod back to your computer, a complicated series of steps is necessary, from deleting files from your iTunes folder, revealing hidden files, copying the iPod Control folder, creating a new folder and putting your songs somewhere else for safety. It’s even more complicated than that, but you see the idea.

To avoid this very aggravating scenario or the complicated process necessary to avoid losing all of your music, third party vendors intervened and established some very helpful software.

Three programs that were created to aid you in easily transferring your iPod music to your iTunes library are iPod 2 iTunes, PodMaxx, and Tune Tools.

With these programs you are able to easily copy songs, videos, and playlists from your iPod to iTunes for a moderate. Each program comes with features that would have been helpful on iTunes, and they are all very easy to use. Considering what price you would pay if you lost your complete iPod libary, they are very affordable as they cost between $20 and $30.

Uli Jon Roth - Scorpions Guitarist Bio

August 21, 2009 by Nathan Spencer

The German guitarist, Uli Jon Roth, was born on the 18th of December 1954. He has made a huge contribution to the field of neo-classical metal music. Roth, had formed a band entitled Dawn Road towards the beginning of the 1970s, along with some other members. In 1973 the Scorpions separated owing to Michael Schenker who had left it to join the UFO. The other existing members of Scorpions, Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker combined with the members of Dawn Road to form a very strong group. The group’s name was changed to Scorpions as it had become quite popular during those years. Uli Jon Roth thus became the Scorpions guitarist.

During the years 1974 and 1977 the Scorpions released four albums in which Roth played the role of main songwriter, occasional lead singer and of course the lead guitarist. One of the best selling live albums of the Scorpions, Tokyo Tapes, was recorded in 1978, in Japan. Roth had however left the band before the release of the album. Electric Sun, Roth’s very own band was formed and three albums were released. The first album was released in the year 1979. Dedicated to Jimi Hendrix , it was entitled Earthquake. Fire Wind, released in 1981, and Beyond the Astral Skies in 1985 were the other albums. They were dedicated to Anwar el-Sadat and Martin Luther King respectively.

Later on Roth composed 2 concertos and 4 symphonies and had also performed with some symphony orchestras all through Europe. The name ‘Uli John Roth’ was used by him for all his concerts and album releases after this. In the year 2001 Roth had even played for Castle Donington, which happens to be an outdoor rock festival. Later on this got released on DVDs. In 2006 at Wacken Open Air Festival, Roth had featured in a concert along with the Scorpions. It was named as “A Night To Remember, A Journey Through Time” and had become a great success.

Roth happens to be the creator of the Sky Guitar and the founder of the Sky Academy. These are the best rock guitars for beginners. He had particularly made custom guitars which had additional frets. Roth had five of these kinds of guitars which had been used by the guitarist of Fair Warning and were made by a person of British origin. One was made with 36 frets, and the other had 42 while the third was fretless. The fretless guitar was used in the album, Beyond the Astral Skies.
