Heart Attack ” How is it Different From Angina?

June 11, 2009 by Shanae Ferne

Have you heard the terms heart attack and angina, and thought that they were interchangeable terms? This is not the case. They are both types of heart disease that result from diseased heart (coronary) arteries, but differ in what happens in those arteries. After reading this, you should be able to tell someone how heart attack and angina differ.

It is beneficial to find out more about the anatomy of the heart so that you can discern heart attack from angina. The outside walls of the heart consist of muscle, and there is a wall of muscle that passes through the center of the heart. This divides the heart into two parts. However, the two parts are further separated in half again, resulting in four chambers.

Each half of the heart is also split in half somewhat horizontally. As a result, there are four hollow areas inside the heart. The two top parts are known as the atria. The two bottom parts of the heart are named the ventricles. After blood has circulated throughout your body, it comes back to your heart through the atrium on the right side. Because it has just come back from giving your body’s cells oxygen, it has little oxygen left. After going through the right atrium, it goes to the right ventricle. From the right ventricle, the blood is transported to your lungs, where the blood picks up oxygen again. Now that the blood contains oxygen, it passes through the left atrium, and then the left ventricle. From there, the blood is transported to all parts of the body to provide them with oxygen and nutrients.

Just like your heart supplies blood and oxygen to all your body parts, it also has to supply oxygen to itself too. The way it does this is through the coronary arteries that are found on its surface. These coronary arteries are involved when a heart attack or angina occurs.

In most cases, atherosclerosis is the main cause of heart attack and angina. Atherosclerosis is the plaque that develops on the inside of your artery walls.

When someone has angina, this means that there is less oxygen that gets to the heart through the coronary arteries, but there is not a complete blockage of the coronary arteries. Angina can result in weakening of the heart over time, making it a less effective pump. Take note of angina, because even though it is not a heart attack, you could have a heart attack in the future. People who have also had heart attacks in the past can also suffer from angina.

Heart attack, on the other hand, is when blood becomes completely blocked off in one or more of the coronary arteries, and there is damage/muscle death that occurs to the heart. Heart attack is known by the medical term, (acute) myocardial infarction, or MI or AMI for short.

In summary, angina and heart attack involve the same anatomical structures ” the coronary arteries- but they are different in that heart attack results in complete blockage whereas angina does not.

Heart Angina - Is it the same as Heart Attack?

June 7, 2009 by maxima maina

Many people get heart attacks and angina confused when they are, in fact, two different (but related) conditions that affect the heart. In what follows, you will come away with a better understanding of the anatomical differences between the two of them.

First, it helps to have a basic understanding of the heart before you understand what the differences are between heart attack and angina. The heart is a hollow muscular pump. It is separated by a wall, called the septum, into the right and left halves of the heart. The right side of the heart contains blood that is low in oxygen, and the left side contains oxygenated blood.

The right half of the heart is made up of the right atrium (the top half) and the right ventricle (the bottom half). The left side of the heart is also split into the left atrium and the left ventricle. The biggest difference between both halves of the heart is that non-oxygenated blood passes through the right side of the heart, and oxygenated blood passes through the left side of the heart. When oxygen-rich blood leaves the left ventricle, it is sent to all parts of the body to deliver this vital oxygen. The blood travels through arteries tot get to your body’s various parts.

So how does your heart get oxygen too? It gets the vital oxygen from its own set of arteries called coronary arteries. They are located on the surface of the heart.

Most often, angina and heart attack occur due to atherosclerosis, or “hardening of the arteries.” However, there are a few other reasons for heart attacks.

In the case of angina, blood flow to the heart becomes temporarily decreased. So when this happens, it also results in less oxygen getting to the heart muscle. Angina is not a good thing. It should be noted that people who have angina have not all had heart attacks before, but angina could be a warning signal that you could have a heart attack in the future. Angina, however, is not a heart attack. It will usually be brought on during times of stress related to doing too much physical effort, being under emotional stress, eating too much, or being somewhere that is overly cold or hot.

Heart attack, on the other hand, is when blood becomes completely blocked off in one or more of the coronary arteries, and there is damage/muscle death that occurs to the heart. Heart attack is known by the medical term, (acute) myocardial infarction, or MI or AMI for short.

The thing to come away with is that angina and heart attack do differ. Heart attack results in no oxygen getting to the heart at all, whereas angina is when there is a reduced supply of oxygen getting there.

Is Running On A Treadmill Better Than Running Outdoors?

June 4, 2009 by Trilochan Bhattacharya

One question I get asked all the time is whether running outdoors is better than running indoors. Sure, a treadmill is more convenient and it’s certainly nicer on a chilly morning, but is it any better or worse than simply hitting the bricks? The answer to this is actually pretty interesting.

There isn’t a big difference between running indoors and running outdoors. Keeping that in mind, it is important to note that there are a few benefits to running outdoors as opposed to the treadmill, especially is you are running to lose weight.

  1. Running in Nature Can Help Your Balance - when you run outdoors you’re going to encounter a lot of different terrain, which is going to mean that your body must make small adjustments as you move. You may be running through a park or up and down a hilly area. All of these little movements are working smaller muscle fibers used for balance that are rarely used. The other benefit of this uneven terrain is that you are generally going to burn more calories as you adjust your intensity to your environment.
  2. Getting Out of the House - I know it might seem a little corny, but running outside means you’re going to be getting more fresh air. This won’t change you’re life drastically, but it’s a nice benefit. Running outdoors means that you can take a break and get away from the technology of the modern world for a while.
  3. Healthy Dose of Vitamin D - Take the time to run outdoors means that you’re going to be in the sunshine and be getting a nice helping of vitamin D, which has been shown to play a role in cancer prevention and prevention of cardiovascular disease. A healthy dose of sunlight has also been shown to reduce depression and generally make you feel happier.

I’m sure some of you may be resisting the idea of leaving your treadmill behind to go out in the heat or the cold.I know I love being able to point my treadmill at the TV and run while watching Oprah, but there is something so much better about being in nature and not couped up in the house running on the same strip of rolling rubber. All in all, I’d take the treadmill on the chilly mornings, but running outside can take your fitness, both mental and physical to a whole new level.

How to Spot and What to do With Symptoms of a Heart Attack

No one really knows when a heart attack will strike, as you don’t even get a warning really. You may be as fit as a fiddle, but you can still have symptoms of a heart attack and unfortunately being fit does not mean you won’t have one. There are different types and different degrees of heart attack and then there is angina pectoris. Angina has the symptoms of a heart attack, but is different. Angina Pectoris actually means constriction of the chest.

Heart attacks are caused by an obstruction of flow to the muscle of the heart. Angina is the blockage of the arteries, which does block the flow of blood, but is not actually affecting the muscle of the heart. Coronary thrombosis, is probably the most common of causes for heart attacks, this is a clot getting stuck, in the coronary artery.

It does depend on how much of the heart muscle is damaged, as to what heart disease symptoms you get. Lots of people have attacks and go on to lead a full and healthy life, with little change. Whereas others are not so fortunate and can even be paralyzed down one side or have a speech impediment. The one thing they all have in common, is the fact that they will have to change parts of their lifestyle, like diet, amounts of exercise and maybe give up some things altogether.

As not much, if any, warning is given when having a heart attack it is good to know what to look for. After all, people who are having a heart attack may not even know themselves what it is. So here are some symptoms to look for, a persistent pain in the chest, which can go to the jaw and arms, pale skin with bluing lips and clammy skin.

The pulse of a heart attack victim, can be rapid, weak or just irregular. They may feel faint and sweat a lot, feel dizzy and faint and gasp for air. Another one of the symptoms of a heart attack that is not commonly known is that people can have a sudden feeling of impending doom, as if they are going to die and of course they might well do (although most people do actually survive heart attacks).

When someone does get a feeling of impending doom the only thing to do, is to talk to them in a calm and comforting manner. Tell them what you know about heart attacks and reassure them. Now we’ll look at other things to do, if anyone is having an attack.

The first thing to do should be the most obvious, but not everybody does it - call an ambulance, as the person having the attack, is going to need it. After that, put them in a comfortable position, this is best as a half seated position, on the floor with something against their back and supporting the shoulders. Place something under the knees, to raise them slightly and bring the hands together on the abdomen. Take the persons vital signs, level of response, check breath and pulse. The vitals should be taken at regular intervals, until the ambulance arrives.

Always check the vital signs regularly, the level of response, pulse and breathing, keep talking to them until help arrives and if they have medication, help them to take it. These are the best things you can do for someone with the symptoms of a heart attack.

Symptoms of a Heart Attack and How to Recognize Them

May 28, 2009 by Don Myatt

Most people have only ever seen a heart attack take place on television, in a soap opera. They cannot tell whether it is a mild heart attack or a massive coronary arrest. Angina Pectoris is also a heart related disease, which is sometimes misrepresented by television programs, as it does have some symptoms of a heart attack. Angina pectoris actually means ‘a constriction of the chest’.

The effects and the symptoms of a heart attack are all to do with the muscle or the arteries. People who’s heart muscle is weak, will probably have more lasting damage, than some one who has a clot or blocked artery. Both types are life changing, and things like diet, smoking, drinking and exercise will have to be taken into consideration after a heart attack (or before if you want to take preventative methods). People have to stick with it as well if they don’t want heart disease symptoms a second time.

Symptoms of a heart attack do not appear on cue and rarely do people expect heart attacks to happen at all, but when they do, they can be recognized by some of following these things -chest pains that have been likened to being hit by a sledge hammer, that holds tight and moves down both or just one arm. People suffering from angina also feel this type of pain, but when they rest it is relieved, not so if you have a heart attack. Not being able to catch your breath and abdominal pain are also symptoms and people can collapse with no warning whatsoever.

If someone’s skin suddenly goes an ashen color and their lips go blue, they will probably need your help anyway, but this can also be the symptoms of a heart attack, generally not on their own, but if they also feel faint and dizzy watch out. The pulse will be weak, rapid or just irregular so always check someone’s pulse, if it’s all three - pray! Profuse sweating and skin that is clammy to the touch along with extreme gasping for air are more symptoms of a heart attack.

When someone does get a feeling of impending doom the only thing to do, is to talk to them in a calm and comforting manner. Tell them what you know about heart attacks and reassure them. Now we?ll look at other things to do, if anyone is having an attack.

If someone has medication on them, for their condition, let them take it or help them take it if need be. Always talk to the victim and give them reassurance, this is just as important as all the other vital stuff. So now you know how to look after a heart attack victim, until the ambulance arrives, you can maybe even save someones life.

How To Eliminate Stomach Acid Problems Naturally?

May 24, 2009 by William Lagadyn

There are many people who suffer from either too much or too little stomach acid. Both of these conditions can cause stomach problems including stomach bloating, burping, belching and flatulence more than normal. While everyone sometimes has to deal with digestive problems when they are chronic or severe you need to find assistance. The most common way that people try to deal with these problems is by taking proton pump inhibitors.

As a remedy, doctors prescribe antacids that help to alleviate the symptoms. It will neutralize the stomach acids and give temporary relief. Another class of drugs that help in controlling are Proton pump inhibitors. They are a group of drugs that help in reducing the stomach acid level.

They are widely selling drugs due to their outstanding effects, but have a major drawback in that they reduce the absorption of calcium by the body. As a result, the body is forced to take calcium from teeth and bones. This may lead to a condition called osteoporosis where the bones become brittle and prone to fractures.

Besides that horrible side effect, the drugs stop our digestive system from digesting our foods in a timely fashion, and the longer your food stays in your stomach the more stomach pressure and problems you will have. Although there are many different conditions that can cause stomach acid problems the most common cause is being overly acidic.

Certain foods are known to cause gastric problems. They are spicy foodstuffs, alcohol, soft drinks, beverages, etc. People should avoid junk food and increase the intake of fruits and vegetables which are rich in proteins and vitamins and help to maintain good health. They build strength and increase resistance to diseases.

One of the tests for determining acidity is by using the litmus paper. This can be done at home. Litmus paper is available at all health food stores.

The final test result should be around a value of 7.3 to 7.4 which is slightly alkaline. The suitable timings of tests are in the mornings and evenings.

It must be noted that the dosage is very important and if one takes more than what is mentioned then problems can often take place. The doctors always advise minimum dosage followed by higher amounts later. Natural therapies like breathing and muscle control techniques are as important as medication as different people can react to it differently.
