I was completely stunned to learn that skim milk isn’t a super-food when it comes to strong bones, teeth and muscles. In truth, the author is forced to conclude that - much to his discontent since he grew up on a dairy farm - a diet free from animal protein is truly optimal for augmenting our health and reducing the symptoms of aging.

The China Study book endorses a vegan diet based on unprocessed plant-based foods. You can’t be a “junk food vegan” filling up on oil and white flour and other processed foods. Plant based foods means things you can recognize, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Many advocates to this philosophy take this approach a step further and focus on eating raw plant foods, forgoing foods like rice, barley, pasta, etc. These raw food advocates believe that we preserve and ingest the most nutrition in our foods when we don’t prepare them by cooking them.

Proper Foods Can Keep Disease Away

Research has shown that a traditional Mediterranean diet provides assistance in protecting the body from type 2 diabetes.

The composites of what make the Mediterranean diet so perfect against type 2 is it is robust in olive oil, grains, nuts vegetables, and fish yet it is low in meat, alcohol, and dairy products.

Studies hint that such a diet plays a major role in cardiovascular disease, however, there are not any current studies in how this diet effects the diabetic population.

Researchers gathered 13,000 graduates from the University of Navarra in Spain with no history of diabetes and recruited between December 1999 and November 2007; each graduate had their dietary habits and health were subsequently tracked.

The subjects started the study off by answering a questionnaire that was designed to gauge their overall dietary habits. The 136 questions that were given to the participants, specific questions were asked on how they cooked their foods, what types of oils they used, and dietary products they used.

The 13,000 participants were tracked by a questionnaire that was administered every two years and asked questions about thier lifestyle, eating habits, and overall medical conditions. From this, researchers were able to pick up new cases of diabetes.

The researchers found that participants who stuck closely to the diet had a lower risk of diabetes. A high adherence to the diet was associated with an 83% relative reduction in the risk of developing diabetes.

An important thing to note is that participants who stuck strictly to the diet were thought to have the highest prevalence of risk factors for diabetes such as older age, a family history of diabetes, and a higher proportion of ex-smokers.

This did not happen. In fact the participants had a lower risk of diabetes which suggested that the diet might provide substantial protection.

The primary compounds of the diet include a high intake of fiber, vegetable fat, trans fatty acids, and a moderate intake of alcohol.

A primary element in this diet is the abundant use of virgin oil for cooking, frying, spreading on bread, and dressing salads.

The scientist finished by calling for larger cohorts and trials to confirm their findings.

For many people, the first time they ever heard the term “fruitarian” was in a brief and comical scene in the popular movie, “Notting Hill.” And, while there was a bit of fun made about the woman who identified herself as a fruitarian, the fact of the matter is that there are people who are quite serious and dedicated about following what is known as a fruitarian diet.

The main premise, when following this form of a raw vegan diet, has to do with a person limiting him or herself to only eating fruits, some varieties of seeds, and a limited selection of vegetables. Of course, much of the food selection that a fruitarian chooses for this living raw lifestyle depends on how strictly they choose to follow this diet.

Even though there are many living raw advocates who say that the fruitarian diet is safe and beneficial, there are many in the medical community who do disagree. In fact, most doctors are in agreement in stating that a diet based strictly on fruit is simply unsafe for the body, in terms of getting the necessary nutrition.

Because of this, the medical profession cautions that following this type of diet for a prolonged period of time is not advisable and will not sustain healthy and vital living. As a result of these warnings and concerns, most fruitarians incorporate additional sources of nourishment and other food components into their diets, even though they still rely on raw fruits as the main part of their daily food supply.

The idea of a fruit diet goes back a long way in human history to a time when humans were in their primitive state, and only had a diet that consisted of living foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Fruitarians are also quick to point out that many health and digestive problems are created by the cooking of foods, as is commonly practiced in today’s modern world. They claim that many common diseases and illnesses can be prevented or reversed by focusing on raw food in a daily eating plan.

When you think of good nutrition, you probably don’t think of restaurant eating. In order to stay on your eating plan you must make wise decisions ordering at restaurants. You must educate yourself on exactly what good restaurant nutrition is. Sitting in a restaurant environment, all of the menu choices can be extremely tempting. Especially when you see pictures of fattening cheeseburgers and nachos and desserts; staying on your diet is nearly impossible. However, you don’t have to cheat on your diet commitments just to dine out once in awhile.

Many restaurants will provide you with a card or a piece of paper with the restaurant nutrition information on it if you request it. This is a great way to discover for yourself which of the restaurant’s menu items are good to eat. Fast food nutrition may sound unlikely, but it is true some fast food menu items can adequate amounts of the nutrients your body needs. However, you should limit your fast food nutrition to only once or maybe even twice per week. The rest of your nutrition should come from whole, natural foods, such as those that are found around the outside aisles of your local supermarket. If you are tight on time or need a want a little treat, you can slip through the drive-thru and stick to great fast food nutrition, as long as you have studied your food nutrition facts.

Occasional Treats

It is best to limit your fast food nutrition treats to once a week, if at all. Sometimes, you can’t help but go to your local fast food restaurant. Let’s say you only have a few minutes left on your lunch hour and you only have time to stop through the drive thru to get a quick bite to eat. Or, let’s say that you’ve done really well on your nutritious eating all week long and you are deciding to treat yourself; for these types of cases, fast food nutrition is OK.

Good Choices

It is possible to eat fast food and not undo the progress you have made with your diet plan. As long as you know your food nutrition facts you can make the best fast food nutrition choices possible. This means you know which foods are more wholesome and which ones have been processed and stripped of their nutrients.
