The following story is one of persistence and perseverance. Through a lot of hard work over the years, Anna Chakvetadze has made it in the tennis world. Outranked by many on the junior circuit and never the most able player in Russia during her childhood, Chakvetadze fought hard to climb the ranks as a junior.

Spending a few years earlier this decade to make an impact on the pro scene, Chakvetadze finally came into her own in 2006. Having won tournaments at Moscow and in China at the end of the year, Chakvetadze made an impact while remaining close with her family at the same time.

The proximity of Anna’s family during her ascent on the WTA tour has always been beneficial to her. Additionally, Chakvetadze embraced her beauty by posing for various model shoots and magazine spreads. She’s also a big fan of sports cars.

In 2007, Chakvetadze really hit her stride. Her return looked better than ever, and through the course of the year, she won five tournaments. This brought her to a career best #5 ranking, and she capped off a great year with a run to the semifinals at the US Open.

2007 did not end on a bright note however. On December 18, 2007 burglars broke into her home, tied her up at gun point. Her father was not as lucky as he was beaten severely. The robbers stole over $300,000 worth of jewelry and cash. While the stolen assets can be replaced, the psychological damage inflicted on this day has scarred the Great Russian. She went from cloud nine to being tied up at gun point. Such a traumatic event has ruined many a life and all we can do is hope that it does not claim her as well.

Due to the effect that this event had on her psyche, 2008 was an extremely challenging year for Anna. While she tried every day to focus on tennis and her well being, she had much difficulty, and the level of play she exhibited in 2007 quickly dissipated.

She continues to fight on the court and with herself to regain her former form. This uphill battle is likely to be a challenge for the remainder of the season, but the US Open crowd will do their best to elevate her nonetheless.

Anna continues her quest for tennis glory and living life. She tries daily to move on from the traumatic event on Dec 18, 2007 and one can only hope she does. The criminals may have taken some of her things, but she has hope, health and dignity and the support of crowds where she goes.

Chakvetadze kept her family close to her during her ascent, and this greatly benefited her mental state. It’s often difficult for a young pro to travel around the world alone, without the support of their family. Photographers and magazines quickly took on to Anna’s looks, and she became the focus of many photo shoots as well.

Anna is not afraid of her beauty and as you can tell by the pictures; her personality is front and center. She likes sports cars, the faster the better and has her own collection to prove it Anna was on top of the world during the tennis season in 2007. Her return of serve was considered among the best in the game. Her ability to switch from defense to offense helped her elevate her game to #5 in the world. She reached the semifinals of the US Open and the Year Ending Championships. In all she had wins over both Williams sisters and Jelena Jankovic to go with 4 more titles in her collection.

A horrible event occurred just a few short months later, right when it looked like things couldn’t get much better for Chakvetadze. During the off-season in December 2007, Chakvetadze was at her home in Russia, which was intruded upon by burglars. They tied her up and threatened her with a gun, severely beat her father, and stole over $300,000 in jewelry and other things from Chakvetadze’s house. Needless to say, she was very shaken up.

2008 was a struggle to say the least. Anna tried focusing on tennis and living life, but the nerves of steel that brought her to #5 quickly dissipated. Many tennis fans go out of their way to show support to Anna and try and lift her spirits and belief, which has not gone unnoticed by Chakvetadze.

In 2009, Chakvetadze is still fighting as hard as she can to restore her spirit and bring herself back to her previous state. While this will be a difficult task to say the least, the New York crowd at the US Open is well aware of her struggles, and will be behind her in its desire to see her return to her 2007 form.

No matter how she does from here, all she can do is fight. Having been a fighter all of her life, there’s no doubt that she’ll continue to do so.

Reviewing the Head Liquidmetal 4

August 21, 2009 by Randy Wilson

If you’re the type of player who’s somewhere within the intermediate/advanced range and looking to bring your game to the next level, the Head Liquidmetal 4 may be just what you’re looking for. This racquet has become a staple in tennis circles, winning the Editor’s Choice award at Tennis Magazine recently as well.

Going off standard ratings, a 3.0-4.5 player will see the most benefit from the Head Liquidmetal 4. Most racquets at this level will be very head heavy, but the Liquidmetal 4’s near perfect balance is for the better.

Like all the Head Liquidmetal racquets, this one is very comfortable and easy to maneuver. You really feel in control of the ball coming off your racquet. The shock off the string bed many become used to with lower level racquets disappears with this one. The Head Liquidmetal 4 does a good job of being a true player-friendly racquet.

This racquet has considerable power as well. Though not heavy, it still packs a punch and helps anyone who finds themselves with a weaker swing getting an extra boost, courtesy of the racquet. The sweet spot is sizable as well.

Serving and overheads were our favorite shots to perform with the Head Liquidmetal 4. It had decent power, but the swing weight was a little too light for our liking. So when serving, you might see the first few serves sail on you as you adjust. Once that is squared away, we were able to serve balls with the Head
Liquidmetal 4 with power and location. Spin was fairly easy to generate as well, with nice control.

Improving players who are on their way up and are looking for a new racquet could have a lot of pleasure with the Head Liquidmetal 4. The head size is not obscenely huge, and it does everything pretty well.

The Liquidmetal 4 is the ideal transitory racquet for someone on the way up and looking for a familiar feel with one that facilitates the move from intermediate to advanced. Give it a whirl if you’re feeling good.

Let’s Give Respect to Josh Johnson

August 21, 2009 by Jeff Lintzer

There have been many great pitching seasons during the 2009 MLB season. The National League has especially had its great share of pitchers. While Lincecum, Cain, and Carpenter all get their due, Josh Johnson’s season has gone largely unnoticed.

Since returning from Tommy John Surgery in 2008, Josh is 19-3, with 217 Ks in 241.1 Innings, anchoring the Marlins staff that has the Fish within 5 games of the Phillies in the NL East and within 2 games of Colorado in the NL Wild Card race.

Unless you play fantasy baseball or are a big baseball buff you probably haven’t realized how good he’s been or even known who he is. Well it’s been a winding road for Josh to get here.

Having been drafted straight out of high school seven years ago, expectations were always high for Johnson, who spent three years in the Marlins’ farm system before finally being called up to the majors during the last month of the 2005 baseball season. Johnson got off to a nice start, with four respectable outings.

The next season, Johnson found great success on the mound. The rookie finished with a 12-7 win-loss record and a 3.10 earned run average, almost best in the National League. This is a huge feat for any rookie pitcher, and if not for the fine performances of teammates Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla, Johnson easily could have won a rookie of the year award that season.

The next season told a different story. After dealing with a nagging elbow injury, Johnson couldn’t find his form, beginning the season on a horrible note. This is when the Tommy John surgery took place, and Johnson recovered very quickly, returning to the mound during the summer of 2008.

Fast forward to 2009, and Johnson is one of the best pitchers in baseball. With a 2.85 ERA and 12 wins for the playoff contending Marlins, there’s not much not to like about Johnson’s performance. He is truly one of the best in baseball this season.

If the Marlins make the playoffs this year for the first time since 2003, don’t look much farther than their ace, Josh Johnson.
