Skerries Lighthouse, Discover Anglesey Lighthouses Past and Present

August 21, 2009 by David Phillips

Most sailors who sail the Irish Sea are familiar with Skerries Lighthouse in Holyhead Bay, off the North West coast of Anglesey in Wales. Whichever route their yacht takes, either from Dublin, Pwllheli or Western Scotland, the isolated Skerries Rock and lighthouse soon appear in their sights. From as far as 22 miles distance mariners can see the white flashing light from the 23 metre high automated light now owned by Trinity House.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) occasionally send out a team onto Skerries rock to monitor what is probably the largest tern colony in the world. However, over 200 years ago and matters were very different on this Anglesey coast known for its danger to shipping and littered with shipwrecks. Around 1713 an Irishman called William Trench purchased a 99 year lease on Skerries from William Robinson, a local landowner.

To get the first ever lighthouse going on Skerries would be a major task but this did not stop the entrepreneurial William Trench and he achieved success with the first lights coming on in 1716. While not a powerful light such as in use today, the 35 foot high tower supported an open grate and a coal burning flame was produced. All ships except the British Navy had to pay a levy based on tonnage for passing the lighthouse.

William Trench was succeeding in getting annual income of as much as $2,200 from the lighthouse levies, a very high sum for the period. As the years went by these fees increased significantly, hitting $23,000 in 1828. Ownership of the lighthouse changed a few times over this time and in 1841, Trinity House Corporation secured the freehold for a huge sum of $990,000.

It is very challenging trying to sail through the Langdon Ridge, the gap between Carmel Head on Anglesey and Skerries, even for experienced sailors and in fine conditions. So tricky are the tides and closeness of the rocks that some yachtsmen choose not to go through Langdon, especially at night. Your boat can be pulled along with the flood tide from Holyhead, and before you know it you are up level with Cemlyn Nature Reserve and Wylfa Power Station. These waters are ideal for new tidal turbines and there have already been scoping studies to look at viability as a new source of green energy.

Sailing around this island coastline is great. You can enjoy the wide variety of marine wildlife - dolphins, seals, razorbills and guillemots - and wonder at the history behind the reassuring presence Skerries and the other Anglesey Lighthouses. If you stand on the Anglesey coastal path near Church Bay you may see some kayaks setting off on an expedition to Skerries lighthouse, and they have to judge the wind and tide well to avoid being carried way off course.

Looking back over 250 years to the time of William Trench, Skerries Lighthouse has had a colourful history. With the end of sail and the coming of steam, the lighthouse keepers would have seen famous ships like the Royal Charter and Great Eastern, as well as numerous wrecks. There is a big tern colony on the rock and occasionally yachts and kayaks visit this isolated Anglesey Lighthouse.

Indoor Boat Storage Benefits

June 21, 2009 by Skibber Labskovs

Boat owners were always thought of as spoiled individuals who have inherited daddy’s millions without working a day in their entire lives. While this premise might have been true decades ago, times have certainly changed now and not all boat owners are born with the proverbial silver spoons dangling from their mouths. Some were good enough to excel in their chosen fields and in the process, earned a huge windfall from their intellect and skill.

Many other hardworking folks have dreamed for years of owning a yacht. Though of modest means, they saved and scrimped for years to be able to purchase the boat of their dreams. A few fortunate individuals have hit the jackpot and bought a luxury boat both for their own pleasure and as a symbol of their success.

Whatever path you may have taken to owning a yacht, you must certainly recognize that you are one of an elite few. Consider yourself blessed to be a part of this group, since not all people have the funds to get this kind of pricey item.

If you are a boat owner who is well acquainted with the needs of your prized possession, you are aware that during the times that you are not using it, it should be placed in a safe and secure place. The best way to do this, if you are not exactly a landowner or a supervisor of warehouses, is to hire the services of an indoor boat storage company.

So, you might be wondering just what an indoor boat storage company does, and why you might need their services. After all, you wonder, what’s the harm in leaving the boat docked during the winter months? Can you afford these services? If you’ve got these thoughts swirling through your mind, causing you worry and confusion, read on for in-depth information about indoor boat storage firms and the benefits of utilizing their services.

First of all, an indoor boat storage company offers transport service from the dock to their facility. They also provide a sanitary and dry storage spot so that your boat won’t get rusty or have paint peels due to constantly changing temperatures. A third service is their regular maintenance check up for potential engine troubles and other mechanical failures. In addition to that, they suggest a thorough cleaning and vacuuming of your boat before returning it in the dock.

Some companies have a special treat for loyal patrons. They provide a slightly expensive but vital winterization procedure. Typically, it covers all boat systems and not just the engine. The process entails volatile gas stabilization, water pumping tanks, anti-freeze techniques in the engine and water systems, standard changing of gear lubes and greasing the external fittings.

Each company offers a variation in their asking price. These differences are due to the brands of the materials being used as well as the experience of the personnel in their jobs. Some maintenance personnel charge slightly higher than others because they have better assessment and overhauling skills compared to neophytes in this trade.

Second, in addition to maintenance and storage, the company provides insurance coverage to protect your asset for the entire duration of the time it is housed in the facility. This is a great way to protect your prized possession should anything happen to it.

Finally, contracting the services of an indoor boat storage company will provide you with peace of mind in the event you must travel out of the area for business or pleasure. You won’t need to be concerned with the threat of theft or vandalism, since you’ll know your boat is safely housed in the storage facility.

Getting married? When it comes to planning the honeymoon consider a honeymoon vacation package. It will spare you the trouble of planning the details of your honeymoon vacation. Be careful not to fall for the first vacation package you find on the internet. Follow some basic guidelines to pick a honeymoon vacation package you will enjoy.

Enjoy a honeymoon package, but don’t make the mistake of falling for the first honeymoon package you find on the internet. Just because someone is marketing a honeymoon vacation package is no guarantee that you will get the honeymoon vacation of your dreams. Be selective in choosing a honeymoon vacation package that is sure to please. First, decide on a list of destinations you would both enjoy.

You will probably think of several honeymoon destinations that would meet your expectations. The problem is that you might end up at an impasse when it comes to choosing the ideal location. If this happens, each of you should list things you expect on a honeymoon vacation. Use both lists to choose a destination that matches both of your ideals. Once you have identified things you both enjoy, it will be easier to select the honeymoon vacation package that is right for you.

Don’t get carried away. Select a honeymoon vacation package that works for your budget. If price matters, then browse several honeymoon vacation packages. Choose the one that offers the most amenities for the least amount of money. Don’t sacrifice the things that will make your honeymoon most enjoyable just to trim the budget, but at the same time, be careful not to overspend. That will only make you miserable in the long run.

The earlier you begin your search the better chances of finding the honeymoon vacation to meet your desires and your budget. You will also have more time to decide where to go and what amenities you want. Planning your honeymoon vacation in conjunction with your wedding, will allow you to budget for both. Neither should be sacrificed at the expense of the other.

Search the web thoroughly to find a honeymoon vacation package that is worth your time and money. Less expensive honeymoon vacation packages can be found that offer the same lavish accommodations as more expensive packages.

Finding The Best Vacation Sailing Package

May 16, 2009 by Paul Smith

Get on a boat and sail away to uncover the beautiful islands of archipelagos like the Caribbean, Hawaii, the Bahamas, Florida, Greece and other tropical locations. You can go sailing on your own by hiring a bareboat on which you do the navigating, rowing, and cooking. You can hire a bareboat with a skipper to help with navigation and information of local interest.

There are many companies which provide sailing vacation packages. The most important component of a sailing vacation package is the boat, also known as the transport vehicle. The transport vehicle can be anything from a bareboat with a skipper, to a schooner, or yacht. A lot of it depends on the number of people sailing.

When a large number of people are sailing catamarans can be hired. Catamarans are motorized and can hold big groups. Trimarans are more advanced and larger versions of catamarans. While local transports are also available like schooners seen in Maine, gullets, and caiques common in Greece.

Your vacation package will include certain amenities. What you get depends on what you pay for. This includes food, drink, full meals, or parties. Recreational activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, photo opportunities, live music, and even amenities for kids are provided as a part of some sailing packages.

Sailing vacation packages that include tie-ups with resorts are known as stay-sail vacations. Nighttime is spent in hotels, while sailing goes on during the day. Resort or hotels of a stay and stay vacation depend on the budget.

The price of any sailing vacation package depends on the number of days spent sailing and the amenities provided during the trip. Price also depends on the hotel or resort associated with stay-sail vacation packages. One of the biggest factors in the price of any sailing vacation is the destination.

8 Tips For An Affordable Yacht Charter Vacation

May 16, 2009 by Sarah McAllistair

We’re all trying to cut costs these days, and “staycations” have become all the rage. But sometimes you need to get away from it all and just relax and rejuvenate. A yacht charter may sound like an extravagant vacation that only a privileged few can afford. But it doesn’t have to cost a fortune - it can actually be less expensive than spending a week at a hotel.

Use any or all of these cost-saving strategies to make the vacation of your dreams come true:

1. Share the expenses. Traveling with a group is always less expensive. If you can get a group of 8-10 friends together, you can end up paying as little as $800/person for a week on a really nice yacht in the Mediterranean or Caribbean.

2. Sign up for email alerts and newsletters from charter companies, sailing magazines and other ocean-related publications (such as Islands magazine). Many charter companies and boat owners have lowered their prices as a result of the weakened economy, and this way, you get all the info sent to your inbox, instead of having to spend time searching for it on the web.

3. Negotiate the price. Again, thanks to the less than stellar economic climate, prices are not set in stone, even if you charter through a company. Also ask about the hidden or extra costs - can they be included in the listing price?

4. Save on airfare. Many charter companies have special deals with airlines flying to their charter base - make sure to ask before booking anything.

5. Last minute deals. If you’re able to travel on short notice, look for last minute charters. Booking a yacht only 30 days in advance can save you 25% or more. To make sure you hear about the latest deals available, sign up for newsletters from charter companies, and also set up a few Google alerts.

6. Travel during shoulder season (in between high and off season). This is the best time to travel: the weather will still be nice, but the crowds are gone, and prices on everything will have gone down. If you’re going to the Mediterranean, consider traveling in September or early October. For the Caribbean, late April to mid-June is the best time.

7. Avoid spending the first night in a hotel - instead ask for an “evening boarding” or “early boarding”, which allows to you spend the night before your charter start date on the yacht. There is sometimes a fee associated with this, but it’s usually less than a hotel room, and you only have to unpack once.

8. Boat swapping. If you’re a boat owner, consider swapping boats with someone else. It works just like a home exchange, but with boats, and is a great way to be able to sail exotic waters without spending a fortune. If you are an accomplished boater but don’t own a boat, you can always ask if someone is interested in exchanging their boat for your home for a week.
