There are a number of facts you should know about sensitive skin care but first it is important to learn just what sensitive skin is. The normal explanation is where our skin reacts unfavorably to external stimuli which could be the atmosphere, sunlight, clothing, products that we sue on our bodies causing redness and irritation. The purpose of sensitive skin care products are to stop or reduce these problems and alleviate irritable skin.

The degree of sensitivity can however vary from person to person and depending on that, the type of skin care procedures may vary too. One thing that is almost constant though is the way sensitive skin will almost always react badly to any type of detergent and any products where the formulation is chemical based.

But the damage starts generally beyond a defined threshold or tolerance level. As we all have different tolerance levels, those with more sensitive skin will be more susceptible to skin damage which could actually happen in a short space of time.

A few tips for choosing the right sensitive skin care products are suggested below, these are products which where possible avoid known skin irritants or reduce them to the lowest concentration possible. By using only sensitive skin care products you will dramatically reduce the sensitivity you experience but the products contents will still need to be looked at.

Even within the range of sensitive skin care products available, choose those that have the minimum of preservatives, colorings and other additives. Skin toners are also to be avoided as the active ingredient is alcohol and this will almost certainly irritate your already sensitive skin further.

One of the most common skin problems associated with the hands is using detergent and often for people without sensitive skin so always wear some form of protective hand wear. Before entering out into the sunlight, which can be another skin irritant, it is advisable to apply a formulated sunscreen that will not irritate the skin either.

It isn’t just the sun that can cause problems out of doors either as just normal atmospheric pollution; even dust particles can cause skin irritation so you will need to apply a hypoallergenic moisturizer or special skin care cream to combat this. Then when you clean your face, ensure that nothing contains any soap or alcohol (as mentioned previously) is used and any exfoliation peels or creams are applied carefully not to damage the skin further.

For women that wear makeup, it is recommended that it not be worn for too long and that once again only hypoallergenic skin care products are used. While there is a great deal to think about if you have a sensitive skin condition, it is a matter of getting into a routine and know what causes the irritation as this will save you time and distress.
